Our Local History Society helps you find more about Barnet’s past and meet other people who enjoy history. Barnet Record Society was formed in 1927 after a group of local people became concerned that Barnet’s past was being lost and decided to start a collection of documents and objects relating to the history of Barnet and the surrounding areas. The Society’s first exhibition was held in the Barnet Council Chamber. However, as the years passed, the collection grew, and on 19 March 1938 it was given a permanent home at 31 Wood Street, where it has remained. After discovering that people thought the word ‘record’ indicated a music society, the name was changed in 1967 to Barnet & District Local History Society. It is now 'Barnet Museum and Local History Society'.
